Schultz, Ludwig

Ludwig Schultz was a renowned German watchmaker who lived and worked during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is known for his contributions to the development of the chronometer, which is a timepiece that can accurately measure time even in the rough conditions of sea travel. One of Schultz’s most notable achievements was the development of a chronometer that was used by the German Navy during the early 1800’s. This chronometer was known for its high level of accuracy and reliability, which made it an essential tool for navigating the open seas. During his career, Schultz also designed and built several other types of timepieces, including pocket watches and marine chronometers. His work was highly regarded by his contemporaries and he was considered to be one of the most skilled watchmakers of his time.

In March 1906, the company moved to Post Street in San Francisco. Just a month later, on April 18, 1906, the devastating earthquake struck San Francisco. Despite the catastrophic earthquake and subsequent fire, the nine-story building of Shreve & Co survived almost unscathed. The company then temporarily moved to Oakland for two years while the building in San Francisco underwent renovations. During the First World War, Shreve & Co shifted its production and manufactured aircraft parts for the US government. After the war, the company returned to its core business of selling luxury goods.

In 1967, Shreve & Co was acquired by Dayton-Hudson Corporation, marking the end of the company’s existence as a family business.
