A German 18 Carat rose gold open faced early centre seconds verge pocket watch with calendar and visible balance, circa 1800. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, three arm brass balance. White enamel dial, a window intricately ornamented with gold tendrils at 12 o’clock revealing the three arm brass balance, at 6 o’clock radial time indication with Roman hours, outer minute divisions and Arabic quarter hour numerals, on the left a subsidiary dial for the date, on the right the days of the week and its planetary symbol in red, an outer minute track. Plain case, maker’s mark DIB.

Christian Huzel was one of the pupils of the clergyman, famous precision engineer and watchmaker Phillip Matthäus Hahn.

Philipp Matthäus Hahn was born on November 25th, 1739 in Scharnhausen and he died on May 2nd, 1790 in Echterdingen. He was a German pastor, astronomer and inventor. In about 1763 he devised a precision sundial or helio chronometer that incorporated the correction for the equation of time. In 1774 he further designed one of the earliest mechanical calculators. Hahn was also a renowned clockmaker, several horological museums display his works.
