A rare Swiss 14 carat gold open faced split seconds chronograph lever pocket watch made for the U.S. market, circa 1900. 2/3 Plate movement, a piston tooth lever escapement and gold screw compensation balance. White enamel dial with black Arabic hours, outer minute divisions and red Arabic five minute numerals, an outermost fifth of a second track, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and spade & whip hands. A plain case with maker’s mark AW. Dial signed, case numbered, movement signed and numbered.

Agassiz Watch Co. S.A. was founded in 1876 and specialized in high quality watches. A new calibre was designed based on regular 19”’ watch movements, smaller in diameter and as slim as technically possible. The firm designed entirely new and even thinner movements: first 17”’- 24/12th, then 20/12th and 17/12th. Later, Agassiz merged with Touchon & Co., Geneva, which specialized in very thin movements.
