Gold lever from the German Watchmaking School Glashütte

A German 14 carat gold open faced pocket watch made by Hans Abeler at the German Watchmaking School in Glashütte, circa 1928. The glazed ¾ plate movement with a piston tooth lever escapement and gold screw compensation balance. Silvered dial with applied gold indices, an outer minute track, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and gold kite hands. The case with bezels featuring engraved laurel and leaf tendril decoration. Dial signed, case numbered, movement signed and numbered.

This watch is an outstanding piece of the best quality, as can hardly be expected from school clocks from Glashütte.

Hans Abeler was the son of the German watchmaker and jeweller Heinrich Abeler (1871-1948) and Paula Anna Fränken (1877-1922) from Münster, Westphalia. He completed training at the German Watchmaking School in Glashütte from 1927 to 1928 and 1935.

In addition to this pocket watch, Hans Abeler also made, among other things, a marine chronometer and a tourbillon gear model. For his achievements, he received a cash reward of 40 Reichsmarks from the Georg Jacob Foundation, awarded by the Society of Friends of Apprenticeships. Hans Abeler was a member of Saxonia and founded his own business in Neuss.
