Gold and enamel verge watch with three cases by James Markwick

An English 18 carat gold and enamel verge watch with three cases made for the Ottoman market, Hallmarked London 1813. Verge movement, cock with initials JM for James Markwick, below a star. White enamel dial with Ottoman numerals and fancy blued steel hands. Both outer cases pink, green and red enamelled, central polychrome enamel painting, scene with watermill, in the background the sunrise in pink engine turned enamel, plain inner case, master’s mark AN. Dial signed, case and movement with matching number 24713.

This piece has a comparable sister watch No. 24717. Markwick-Markham was founded by James Markwick Jr. and his son in law Robert Markham. Markwick-Markham became famous for his watches destined for the Turkish market. At the end of the century, Markham himself and his successors began to use the names of other watchmakers for their products destined for the Eastern market. These watchmakers were Francis Perigal, Peter Upjohn, H. Story, Henry Borrell, John Johnson, Louis Recordon, Charles Dupont, each a respected watchmaker with their own production.
