Gold key winding chronograph

A Swiss 18 carat gold hunting cased keyless pocket watch with chronograph made in the early 20th century. Resold by Charles Grottendieck in Brussels, Belgium. The crown winding watch features a mechanical movement with an anker escapement, spiral balance and micrometric adjustment. It has a white enamel dial with stylized black Arabic hours, an outer minute track, outermost fifth of a second divisions with red Arabic five minute numerals and a blued central hand for the chronograph. Additionally, it includes small seconds at 6 o’clock and gold filigree hands. The hinged case features a decorative, high relief monogram on the back. The gold cuvette bears the retailer’s name.

Charles Grottendieck was a well-known watchmaker and jeweller in Brussels, active around the late 19th century, who produced luxury pocket watches and pendulums, often under the name Chs Grottendieck Bruxelles. He was known for his craftsmanship and decorative pieces, especially French carriage clocks with rare striking mechanisms, which he sold to the wealthy elite.
