Very fine, rare and thin Swiss 18 carat white gold keyless Art Deco lever dress watch with split seconds chronograph, instantaneous 60 minute register and double tachometer scale for 1000 meters, circa 1929. Sold on April 30, 1929 to John B. Stetson Jr. Rhodium plated movement, 22 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, bimetallic compensation balance, swan-neck micrometer regulator, Breguet balance spring. Silvered dial with Breguet numerals, outer minute/second track with Arabic five minute/seconds, outermost double tachometer scale with 1000 meter base, minute register at 12, sunken subsidiary seconds and original blued steel Breguet hands. Satiné and polished case, snap-on back with initials J.B.S. Jr. Dial signed, case with maker’s mark HP.

John B. Stetson (1884-1952) was born on October 14, 1884. The son of the founder of the John B. Stetson hat company, he worked for a time in his father’s firm. He was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1917 to 1920. President Coolidge appointed him Ambassador to Poland, which post he held from 1925 to 1929. After his resignation in 1929, Stetson formed a brokerage firm. He died in 1952.
