Gilt brass oignon watch by Musson

An early, fine and very rare French gilt brass single handed Louis XIV oignon watch, wound through the centre, circa 1685. and with early type symmetrical balance cock. Frosted gilt full plate movement, winding from the front only, baluster pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, three armed steel balance, short balance spring, pierced and chased symmetrical cock decorated with inhabited foliage in three panels, Tompion type regulator, steel release catch spring with foliate terminal. White enamel dial with large black painted Roman numerals, inner quarter hour ring and original blued steel tulip hands. The case back chased and engraved with a scene of Diana the Huntress within a forest glade, foliate strapwork border and bezel, square hinge, loose ring pendant. Movement signed.
