Unsigned lute-form watch from Vienna

An Austrian gold and enamel watch in the shape of an oriental harp with enamel chatelaine, circa 1870. Earlier associated gilded full plate movement with verge escapement, flat three-arm brass balance, decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, fusee and chain, and cylindrical pillars. The white enamel dial features Roman numerals, an aperture for winding, and gilt spade hands. The case is made of gold, with a soundboard of red guilloché enamel heightened with a floral wreath of opaque green and white enamel, a glazed aperture surrounded by pearls, and the back adorned with a translucent blue guilloché enamel border and band of champlevé enamel. The case back bears a control mark for Vienna (1866–1872) and the maker’s mark JW. The chatelaine is made of gold, with the chains set with enamel flowers and a musical score, and the pendant hook mounted with a blue guilloché enamel shield with an opaque white enamel border.

The movement is fully wound but not running, and it appears to be dirty and tarnished. The balance of the original movement would have likely matched the glazed aperture on the soundboard, but the present one does not. The dial may be contemporary with the case, which is red guilloché enamel restored in soft enamel on the soundboard. There are some small chips, scratches, and minor losses to the champlevé enamel of the band. The chatelaine appears to be in good condition.
