Crucifix neck watch with signature Ettienne [sic] Bordier
–
An Austrian rock crystal and enamel cruciform watch in the style of the mid-17th century, bearing the signature of Ettienne [sic] Bordier, circa the 19th century. This watch features a cruciform gilded movement with a highly decorative engraved backplate, a three armed balance without a rim, and a cock with a long foot, pierced and engraved with scrolling flowers and foliage. It includes a fusee and gut line, baluster pillars, and the signature of Ettienne [sic] Bordier fecit. The gilded dial is engraved with panels depicting saints and Adam and Eve in the garden, a silver chapter ring with Roman numerals and half hour divisions, and a dial centre embellished with a champlevé enamel flower head, all bordered with green champlevé enamel, with a single blued steel hand. The case is made of multi faceted rock crystal with silver mounts and a stylised floriate form pendant.

Length including pendant: 85 mm

–
A mid-17th century watchmaker is recorded under the name Etienne Bordier. It is likely that the maker of this watch chose to sign it with the Bordier name so that it would seem consistent with the style of the watch.

Movement is running smoothly. Winding is consistent, and the hand setting appears acceptable. The dial has small marks and scratches throughout. The case exhibits scratches on the silver mounts. There is some variation in the enamel colouration, along with several chips. The rock crystal covers have chips along the edges of the front and back panels, and at least one of the side panels has been repaired using soft resin.
