Urban Jürgensen, the eldest son of the court watchmaker Jürgen Jürgensen in Copenhagen, was born on August 5, 1776, in Denmark. At a young age, he exhibited a talent for art and science and was proficient in Danish, French, English, and German. At the age of 16, he began his apprenticeship with his father and learned the various aspects of watchmaking. After completing his training, he went to Le Locle (Switzerland) in 1797 to work for Jacques-Frédéric Houriet. He later moved to Paris and worked for Ferdinand Berthoud and Abraham Louis Breguet, where he established connections with these renowned masters. With Ferdinand Berthoud’s advice, he went to John Arnold in London to refine his knowledge of constructing marine chronometers. He developed a unique chronometer escapement with two escapement wheels.
