Open faced oval form pocket watch by Jan Jansz. Bockels

An early and rare single-handed Dutch oval pre-balance spring Renaissance watch, circa 1610.
Silver and fire gilt brass case, the middle part with very fine engraved foliate scrolls, decorated hinge and set with unusual rose cut diamonds. Brass fire gilt dial with the border finely engraved with summer flowers applied silver chapter ring with Roman numerals; the centre with an engraved view of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice with figures in the foreground and a single iron hand. Florally engraved and signed fire gilt full plate movement with gut/fusee, verge escapement, applied blued and pierced lock for the mainspring, Egyptian movement pillars, iron ring balance without balance spring and pierced balance cock.
