Silver pocket watch with striking mechanism

An early, large Dutch silver pair cased quarter repeating verge pocket watch made by Simon van Leeuwen, Amsterdam, circa 1700-1720. The watch features a double open faced case with intricate pierced and engraved decoration of tendrils, blossoms, birds and squirrels. The inner case is also elaborately worked with an engraved harbour scene, birds and grimaces. The white enamel dial features Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the minutes and later decorative hands. The watch has a striking mechanism that includes a bell and an early verge movement with a quarter hour repeater. The plate is signed by the maker adding to the historical significance of the piece.
