Gold and enamel pair cased watch by Ilbery
–
An English gold and enamel pair cased duplex watch made for the Chinese market, circa 1804. The gilded full plate movement features a duplex escapement, a three-arm gold balance, a diamond end-stone, a decoratively engraved balance cock, foot, and border, a fusee and chain, and cylindrical pillars. It is signed and numbered by Ilbery, London, with the serial number 6092. The white enamel dial showcases Roman numerals, an outer Arabic minute ring, subsidiary seconds, gold hands, and blued steel subsidiary seconds.
–
The watch features an 18k gold inner case with a foliate engraved border and a stylized flower head at the centre, and a pendant adorned with translucent and champlevé enamels. It is hallmarked London 1804 with the maker’s mark WM incuse. The outer case is decorated with champlevé and guilloché enamel banding in red, blue, and black, and a restored enamel panel with a polychrome painted classical scene. The front bezel is also hallmarked London 1804.

The movement is in good running condition and appears to be clean, with a few light scratches on the plates. There is some slight gapping around the cut-out of the dust cap for the balance cock. The dial has a hairline crack running between 8 and 9 o’clock towards the centre. The inner case has been polished, but the definition of the engraved decoration remains clear. The central panel of the outer case has been restored in hard enamel, along with its immediate border. The champlevé and guilloché bezels have some small chips and losses, as well as some repairs in soft enamel. Additionally, there are some small chips in the pendant enamel.
