William Hargood was born in 1762, the son of a ship’s purser, and joined the Royal Navy in 1773 at the age of eleven. First in action in 1776 during the American War of Independence, he was made Lieutenant in 1780 and accompanied Nelson on the disastrous expedition to Nicaragua the same year. In December 1803 he was given the ’74’ Belleisle which was undoubtedly the pinnacle of his long career. Transferred to another ’74’, the Northumberland, in 1808, Hargood was then made a Rear-Admiral in 1810, given command of a squadron in the Channel in 1811, and created K.C.B. in 1815. His last appointment was as Commander in Chief, Plymouth, 1833-36, and his final promotion was to Admiral of the White in 1837; he died at Bath on 12th December 1839.
