An English heavy and fine half-hunting cased pocket watch, circa 1869.
18-carat gold case with enamelled Roman numerals, case punch J.W.Benson and hallmarks London 1869. Fine English lever movement with matching numbers and case signed Watchmaker to the Late Queen, patent 4658. Signed white enamel dial with Roman numerals, sunk subsidiary dial for the constant seconds and decorative gold hands.

Important English watchmaker, watchmaker of the court for Queen Victoria and Prince of Wales. Benson comes from an English watchmaker family whose company has existed since 1749. James William worked from 1857 to 1887 in London, 62 & 64 Ludgate Hill. Benson described himself from 1865 as a watchmaker of the Prince of Wales. At this time, the product range of this well-known company included pocket watches of all types and complications, pocket and marine chronometers, amongst others, with movements by Victor Kullberg, Mercer, Hector|Golay, Marc Plojoux and Usher & Cole, clocks and tower watches.

An example of this is the watch of the town hall of Portsmouth. Later, Arthur H. and Alfred Benson took over the succession. Today Benson is part of the Asprey Group.
