Gold open faced pocket watch by Justin Vulliamy

An important, fine pair cased English verge pocket watch – with a very fine matching gold enamel chatelaine and original red morocco case, circa 1773.
Two cases: outer case – gold, reeded back cover, florally engraved, inset with translucent blue enamel foliage and ribbon decor, the centre with an oval enamel plaque with a polychrome crest, geometric patterned bezels, à goutte, large lateral hinge; Inner case – 18 carat gold, polished, case maker’s punch mark “PM” (Peter Mounier of Frith Street, Soho, London). Enamel dial with radial Roman hours, Arabic minutes, auxiliary seconds and filigree hands. Fine full signed plate movement, keywind, applied florally engraved and pierced ornaments, firegilt, with chain/fusee, moulded movement pillars, cylinder escapement, three-arm steel balance, fine florally engraved, pierced balance cock with mascaron and chatoned diamond endstone on balance. Gold/gilt Chatelaine.

The chatelaine consists of four different sized oval tablets with opaque polychrome enamelling; all show Christian motifs and are framed by small ornamental plates and chains with inlaid flower scrolls with translucent blue enamelling, length: 112 mm. Justin Vulliamy (1712-1797) Renowned in London as an excellent watchmaker, the Swiss-born Vulliamy went into partnership with Benjamin Gray, watchmaker for King George II, in 1730. After Gray’s death in 1764 Vulliamy continued his business by himself.
