–
An English pinchbeck, tortoiseshell, enamel pair cased pocket watch, circa 1750.
The full plate movement of this item is adorned with gilt and features a verge escapement, a pierced and engraved balance cock, a plain three-armed balance, a diamond end stone, silver regulation, and baluster pillars. The enamel dial displays Roman radial hours and an outer minutes track with Arabic five-minute numerals pointed to by Louis XV-style hands. The pinchbeck cases are designed in a polished plain inner and outer case with a tortoiseshell pattern. The signature of Isaac Rogers from London in 1798 can be found on the movement.

Pinchbeck is a type of alloy made of copper and zinc that was popular in the 18th century as a substitute for gold. It has a similar colour and lustre to gold but is less expensive. The cases are likely made of pinchbeck to provide a protective layer for the watch’s movement.
