An English gentleman’s rare triple cased half quarter repeating “à toc” pocket watch, circa 1769.
Three cases: transport case – gilt, the bezels covered in shagreen, à goutte, glazed back; outer case – gold, à goutte, the case back lavishly engraved: “Rebecca and Eliezer at the Well”, the bezels florally engraved and decorated in champlevé enamel, large lateral hinge; inner case – 18 carat gold, polished, case maker’s punch mark “PM”, movement protection cap, pusher for repetition via pendant. Enamel dial, radial Roman hours, Arabic minutes and blued “Poker & Beetle” hands. Signed, keywind, firegilt full plate movement with applied floral engraved and pierced appliques, chain/fusee, solid movement pillars, 2 hammers, cylinder escapement with polished steel cylinder, three-arm steel balance, rich florally engraved balance cock with mascaron and chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

Justin Vulliamy Renowned in London as an excellent watchmaker, the Swiss-born Vulliamy went into partnership with Benjamin Gray, watchmaker for King George II, in 1730. After Gray’s death in 1775 Vulliamy continued his business by himself.
