Silver open faced verge watch by John Wilter
–
A fine English pair-cased verge clockwatch in silver repoussé outer case with champlevé dial and date, circa 1775.
This watch has a fire gilt full plate fusee verge movement with a pierced and engraved bridge cock and footplate and a silver regulation disc. The watch features a silver champlevé dial with inlaid radial Roman numerals, Arabic minutes, and a date window at 6 o’clock. However, the minute hand is missing, leaving only the hour hand. The outer case is adorned with a repoussé design featuring a very elaborate scene, while the inner case is smooth.
The dial and movement are both signed by Wilter of London. A marking inside the back of the inner case reads I C below two horizontal lines. On the back of the outer case is a marking that reads G COCHIN F. It is unclear what these markings signify.

John Wilter worked as a watchmaker in London between 1730 and 1740. Other sources mention it between 1760 and 1784. There are watches signed with John Wilter or Wilter called “pseudo-London” watches. These are probably made in Geneva. E.g. a pocket watch from John Wilter London N °. 5719 The British Museum.
