The case of this extremely rare verge watch is very elaborate and extremely beautiful. It was made in the style of the 17th century, but dates from the 19th century like the movement, although it still has a verge escapement. The name on the plate is probably not the watchmaker but a reference to John Ford of Ticehurst (1629-1714). This would also explain the style of the case.
