Gold pocket watch with ruby cylinder escapement

A very fine and very rare French, a dumb quarter repeating pocket watch with ruby cylinder escapement and eccentric seconds, circa 1816. Accompanied by a Breguet ratchet key and short chain. Sold to Lord Landerdale on October 8, 1816, for 2200 Francs. An Empire case by Tavernier, engine-turned, polished bezel and border, reeded band. Hinged gold cuvette. Gold, engine-turned dial, polished chapter ring with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track with dot markers, eccentric subsidiary seconds between 3 and 4. Blued steel Breguet hands.

A frosted gilt movement, souscription calibre, standing barrel, jewelled train, overhanging ruby cylinder escapement with polished steel escape wheel, three arm brass balance, the top pivot with pare-chute, flat blued steel balance spring, bimetallic temperature compensation curb fitted to the index regulator, repeating with a single hammer on the side of the case activated by a pull- and twist piston in the pendant. Dial and cuvette signed. Case with Tavernier’s mark.
