Brass ship’s chronometer by Simon Vissière

A rare, very fine French ship’s chronometer with a 49-hour power reserve, circa 1850. The case is a mahogany box with brass inlays, hinged handles at the side, a lid and glass, a case key, brass gimbals, a bowl, and a three-body. The enamel signed and numbered dial has Roman radial hours at 9, central Arabic minutes, extra seconds at 3 o’clock, 49-hour power reserve indicator and blued Breguet hands. And the gilt signed and numbered brass movement has conical pillars, chain/fusee, spring detent escapement, heavy chronometer balance with four weights and two screws, helical balance spring, adjustable balance spring fitting device with four screws and a chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

Simon Vissière was a French chronometer maker born in Paris in 1822. He won a silver medal at the Industrial Exhibition in Paris in 1849 and was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1863. Vissière was one of the first chronometer makers to experiment with non-magnetic metals and received a patent for a chronometer escapement in 1867. He won a gold medal for his watch at the World Exhibition of 1867 in Paris. Simon Vissière died on January 4, 1887, in Cannet at the age of 64.
