Brass ship’s chronometer by Breguet
–
A French mahogany two day marine chronometer watch with 49 hour power reserve, circa 1860. This watch has a chain fusee movement with Harrison’s maintaining power, an Earnshaw type detent escapement, split bimetallic balance with a helical spring, gilt plates, and the rear of the dial is numbered 375 & 868. The diameter of the silvered dial is 8 cm, with a state of wind sector and seconds dial, signed Breguet, No. 868 Depot De La Marine. The case is a brass bowl gimballed in a three-tier brass-bound case with brass carrying handles, an ivory plaque signed and numbered Breguet, No. 868, and a lid with a later brass plaque engraved Marala. It comes with a Breguet certificate dated 18th August 2020, recording the sale of No. 868 to au Ministére de la Marine.

The dial has several surface scratches on the silver but remains in good condition overall. The movement is complete and in very good condition, though it might benefit from fresh oil. The case is generally in good condition and has likely been rectified in the past. There is a crack on the lid, along with other old scuffs and marks throughout. The lacquer on the brass is distressed. It includes a tipsy winder but lacks a case key.
