Open faced pocket watch by Julius Assmann
–
A splendour German pocket watch in Renaissance case, circa 1877. This watch features a 14K gold case in a stunning Renaissance style with intricate engravings. It has a Glashütte precision lever movement with a golden escape wheel, an original enamel dial with Roman numerals, a subsidiary dial with Arabic seconds, and steel hands. The watch is in excellent overall condition, though the enamel dial has a fine hairline. This is a rare edition with matching numbers on the case and movement, both of which are signed. Professor Graff Dresden probably decorated the case.

Julius Assmann
Julius Assmann was a skilled watchmaker born in 1827 in Glashütte, Germany. He worked for his father-in-law, Ferdinand Adolph Lange, who is credited with establishing the German watchmaking industry in the 1840s. Assmann founded his own company, the Julius Assmann Deutsche Präzisions-Taschenuhren-Fabrik (German Precision Pocket Watch Factory) 1852. His company produced key wound pocket watches that soon earned him a gold medal from the German Trade Industry. Within two years, his watches progressed to crown winding and the three-quarter plates that became characteristic of Glashütte watches. Assmann died in 1886 at the age of 58, and his company was divided among his family.
