–
An important, one handed splendour coach clock with hour self strike and alarm, circa 1580.
Firegilt full plate movement, maker’s mark and hallmark, three barrels, one hammer, verge escapement, locking plate, stackfreed to even out the changing torque of the mainspring, foliot and hog’s bristle.
Silver dial, protected by a flower like pierced cover with a crest in the centre, it has peripheral, engraved Roman hours with raised buttons for reading the time in the dark as well as an inner 12 hour display using Arabic numerals, the centre exquisitely engraved with a leopard and a dog on the verge of a fight, a squirrel on a tree is about to drop an acorn on the head of the leopard, a high mountain with a castle visible in the background. A firegilt brasse case, engraved coat of arms to the slightly domed back lid, the open work case band has a gentle bombé shape that is typical for the late 16th century rear bell.
