Gold-plated watch with cylinder escapement by Christoph Friedrich Strubel

An important early German gentleman’s pocket watch with date and cylinder escapement, circa 1785. Christoph Friedrich Strubel, the brother-in-law of the famous precision engineer and watchmaker Phillip Matthaeus Hahn, made this watch. He was one of Hahn’s first associates as a watchmaker. The polished à goutte case is gold-plated and has engraved edges. The enamel dial features radial Roman hours, radial Arabic minutes, a date indicator with red Arabic numerals, and blued Breguet hands.  A full plate movement that is key-wound, fire gilt, and signed, with a cylinder escapement, a three-arm brass balance, finely floral engraved, pierced balance cock.

Christoph Friedrich Strubel was based in Echterdingen and Schorndorff. Philipp Matthäus Hahn employed him in Kornwestheim. Strubel married Juliane Félicitas Hahn, who was Philipp Matthäus Hahn’s sister. Additionally, he was Johann Christoph Schuster’s brother-in-law, who was married to Maria Katharina Jacobina Hahn. Strubel worked for Philipp Matthäus Hahn but also sold small watches under his own name.
