Gold open faced pocket watch by August Bacher
–
A German remarkable gentleman’s pocket watch associated with the Hahn watchmaking dynasty, with early duplex escapement, circa 1840.
The case is 18 carat gold and lavishly florally engraved. The silvered, also lavishly florally engraved, dial has an eccentric hour chapter ring with radial Roman numerals, jumping centre seconds and Breguet hands. And the movement is a 1/2 plate movement, keywind, frosted, gilt and signed “August Bacher in Stuttgart, Hofmechanismus & Hofuhrmacher “Neue Duplex-Hemmung”, with six jewels and a three-arm ring balance.

August Bacher,
August Bacher from Schondorf was engineer at the court in Stuttgart and took over Christoph Matthaeus Hahn’s workshop in Stuttgart after his death in 1833. We know of several high quality watches made by Bacher, some of which have been created in the tradition of Hahn. There is a pocket watch with jewels by Bacher (described as “a very elegant pocket watch with jewels”)with an escapement requiring no oil, which was supposedly invented by Bacher. The timepiece we have here could very well be that watch.

Signed: August Bacher in Stuttgart
