Silver repoussé pair cased watch by Simon Mair
–
A historically interesting German repoussé double-cased verge watch with striking mechanism, circa 1725. Made by court watchmaker Simon Mair, formerly part of the famous collection of the Le Roy family in Paris.
Very early verge movement, repeating the quarter-hours, great vase pillars. Enamel dial with Roman radial hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals, and gilt hands. Pierced silver case, beautiful repoussé work, rare design, back with a mythological scene, back rim with four cartouches and four different portraits, probably noblemen, face with the more common representation of various animal figures, richly decorated with tendrils, high-quality 5-part lateral hinge, the inner case also extremely splendidly worked, likewise pierced tendrils with birds’ heads, various animals and a grotesque face, bell, signed.
