Silver deck watch by John Johnson
–
A very interesting, impressive English chronometer in the manner of John Arnold, circa 1795. The watch features a silver case decorated with an engine-turned pattern, and it has a movement that is also numbered to match. The movement is an early and unique English chronometer movement, similar to those made by John Arnold. It is a spring detent chronometer with a diamond endstone and a rare hairspring. The movement is signed and numbered on the plate. The dial is made of enamel, although there is some cracking in the rim area. It has Roman numeral hour markers arranged in a radial pattern, an outer track for minutes, a subsidiary dial for seconds, and gold hands.

The watch case is numbered to match the movement and was certainly made for it, but it has no English Hallmarks. The movement displays evidence of being repaired in the past. The signature on the watch confirms that it was made by John Johnson of Gray’s Inn Passage, who took over his father’s business in 1775 after his passing. This watch was once a part of one of the most significant European chronometer collections.
