An important German silver open faced verge pocket watch with alarm, circa 1675. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, one hammer, a barrel for the striking mechanism, verge escapement and three arm brass balance. Silver dial with Roman champlevé hours, a central rotating fire gilded brass alarm clock disc with floral engraving and a single hand. The case is pierced and finely ornamented, a bottom bel for the alarm. Movement signed.

The present timepiece is the third known work by this outstanding Augsburg watchmaker. Although we can learn little about him, his work is significant. The cases are characterized by extreme artistry and the works are technically highly sophisticated and masterfully executed.

Michael Hof(f)richter, Augsburg was born around 1647 in Oberpeterswalde in Silesia. He achieved the title of master in 1670 and died around 1702.

Augusta Vindelicorum (actually Augusta Vindelicum) is the ancient Roman and neo Latin name of the city of Augsburg , which was the stronghold of German watchmaking around 1600.
