A very fine, rare and unusual Russian birchwood and bone open faced cylinder watch with chain and travelling box, circa 1850. Movement made of wood, pinned wooden bridges and going barrel, without main spring, balance spring and pivots, cylinder escapement with bone staff, plain wood three armed balance, the movement wound through an especially shaped click wheel. Wooden dial, inlaid circular bone cartouches, Arabic numerals, wooden hands and sunk subsidiary seconds. Turned birchwood case, hinged cover. Case signed in Cyrillic.
