Silver watch with subsidiary dials by Bernauda, Élève De Breguet

A rare and large French silver souscription style ruby cylinder watch with subsidiary dials for seconds and 10 second/five minute intervals, circa 1840. Gilded Souscription style movement, signed Bernauda, Élève de Breguet, with ruby cylinder escapement, three arm plain balance, spiral spring with parachute regulation, and compensation curb. Silver engine turned dial with Roman numerals and outer five minute divisions, signed Bernauda, Élève de Breguet; subsidiary dial calibrated for five minutes, its track divided into 10 second increments running clockwise; further subsidiary dial for seconds running counterclockwise. The subsidiaries feature contrasting engine turned decoration to the dial centre, a single pink gold hand with a female setting square to the centre, and two oval cartouches in the dial centre signed Bernauda, Élève de Breguet.

Plain silver back and bezel, silver pendant and bow, gilt hinged cuvette with central winding aperture and milled border, signed Bernauda, Élève de Breguet; case back numbered 4811, with Paris control mark introduced from 1838 and J B within a lozenge shaped cartouche.

The movement is running, and all hands are advancing. The case shows tarnishing throughout, with noticeable scuffs and scratches. The band exhibits wear and the engine turning is faintly discernible. Marks are visible on the inside of the case back.
