Silver, partly gilt verge pendant watch by Jacob Ducimin
–
A Dutch silver single-handed oval pendant watch with alarm and date, circa 1625-1640. This watch features a gilded full plate movement, turned baluster pillars, fusee, and cat-gut, with a verge escapement and flat balance spring. The case and dial are intricately engraved with designs of foliage and ornamentation, while the side, or band, of the case, is pierced to allow the sound of the bell to be heard when the watch strikes the hour. The single hand on the dial indicates both the hours and the half-hours marked in the silver chapter ring, while a small hand attached to a revolving disk shows the alarm indication. The watch also has an aperture at the upper side of the front that displays the date. This remarkable timepiece was crafted by Jacob Ducimin between 1625 and 1640 in Amsterdam, as indicated by his signature on the movement.
