Gold repeating pocket chronograph by C. Dégallier

A very fine, large, heavy, Swiss minute repeating hunting cased pocket watch with chronograph, moon phases, leap-year and perpetual calendar, circa 1900. Retailed by Ch. Grottendieck in Bruxelles.
Matte gilt, ébauche (probably by LeCoultre & Co) movement, keyless-winding, straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, swan-neck micrometre regulator. Enamel dial with Breguet-style radial hours, outer minutes/seconds track with 24-hour numerals (24 in red), subsidiary dial for the seconds at 6, original pear hands, and five horological complications: – minute repeater on two steel gongs (activated by a slide at 6 o’clock); – chronograph (started by the single olive push-piece located on the case band at 12 o’clock); – perpetual calendar; – leap-year; – moon phases. Polished 18K yellow gold case. Dial, case and movement signed. Accompanied by original box and certificate.

Swiss watchmaker
The company C. Dégallier was located in Geneva, Rue de la Coratterie 4; the company was active from about 1870 to 1926. From 1916 the company was located at Place de Cornavin 4. The first watch with a Geneva seal was from C. Dégallier, produced on November 30, 1887. From July 21, 1926, the company continued as Edmond Dégallier through Edmond-Théophile Dégallier

Dégallier became known for his pocket chronometer; in 1883, various Geneva companies were represented at the National Exhibition in Zurich, including C. Dégallier. In 1893 the company was also represented at the Chicago World’s Fair.

Charles Grottendieck was a well-known watchmaker with a jewellery and watch shop in Brussels, Belgium. The company was founded around 1850. Grottendieck was also a representative of Patek Philippe, LeCoultre & Cie SA. and Vacheron Constantin.
