Gold rare lever watch in original box
–
An unusually heavy hunting cased grande sonnerie quarter repeating pocket watch in original presentation box made in Genève, Switzerland, circa 1900. The numbered case of this watch, which is crafted from 14 carat gold, has a monogram on the front lid. The white enamel dial has black Arabic hour and five minute numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock and gold hands. The numbered and glazed movement is fitted with a very fine gilt precision lever escapement, an unusual construction of the grande sonnerie feature according to a Genevan patent, quarter hour self strike and quarter repeating via the same barrel.
The patent number is on the presentation box and engraved on the movement.

The item presented here comes in a special, original box with a release button on the side. The grande sonnerie movement, patented by Stauffer, is extremely rare in a pocket watch version. The patent was more frequently used in travel and table clocks. Henri Onésime Stauffer’s patent 13896 for a repeater with only one barrel for the going train and striking train dates from 1897.
