Gold hunting cased repeating chronograph lever watch
–
A Swiss 18 carat yellow gold full hunter minute repeater chronograph pocket watch made by Volta, circa 1900. It has a mechanical crown wound movement with a lever escapement, a bimetallic balance spring, a minute repeater complication with two hammers striking a gong and an integrated chronograph function, signed and numbered. The white enamel dial shows painted black Arabic numerals for the hours, a minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial at 9 o’clock, a 30 minute counter subdial at 3 o’clock, a 1/5 second external scale, gold Louis XV style hands, and a blued steel central chronograph hand. The massive, round, solid gold hunting case is hinged and has a fluted crown, a chronograph pusher near 4 o’clock, a repeater slide near 3 o’clock, and a case back engraved with an intricately intertwined monogram of initials. The watch includes a signed and numbered gold back cuvette but is missing the protective glass above the movement.

Volta was established by Gaston Piaget in Bienne, Switzerland, in the late 19th century. The brand carved out a niche in the Swiss watch industry by focusing on high grade complicated pocket watches. Unlike mass producers, Volta integrated complex mechanisms like minute repeaters, chronographs, and triple calendars into single watches, often combining them into a Grand Complication. They secured Swiss patents to improve the safety and reliability of repetition mechanisms and developed systems to prevent jamming of internal hammers and gongs. Their focus on mechanical innovation earned top honours at major exhibitions. Engraved gold covers celebrated their achievements. Today, Volta pocket watches are highly collectable, especially rare gold hunter cases with chronograph and minute repeater, which are prized finds at auctions.
