Gentleman’s minute repeating chronograph by Le Phare

A Swiss gentleman’s minute repeating pocket watch with chronograph, circa 1900. Accompanied by the original box, additional dial with Roman numerals and spare parts.
The case is 18 Carat gold, engine-turned and monogrammed, with a signed gold dome, pusher for chronograph via pendant, pusher for repetition at 9, and inner lid with presentation engraving: Robert Tarrant Jr. Chicago 1903. The dial is enamel with Arabic numerals, auxiliary seconds, 30 minute counter, blued spade hands and centre chronograph hand. And the movement is a frosted and gilt bridge movement with finely ground and bevelled chronograph steel parts, ratchet wheel, two hammers / two gongs, governor for repetition, and screw compensation balance.

On November 30, 1888, Barbezat-Baillot, Charles-Ami registered the brand name Le Phare (= the lighthouse) in Le Locle, which he used as the company name from 1905. 1896 Completion of the factory building complex, which with constant additions to the original house of Ch. Barbezat-Baillot from 1883the production facilities had to constantly expand in response to increasing demand. The company now has 200 employees. Barbezat-Baillot was a brilliant watchmaker and inventor and had a large number of patents registered. The Swiss patent 334 was one of the most important inventions of Barbezat-Baillot and includes the use of centrifugal force in the repetition mechanism.

The Felt & Tarrant Manufacturing Company that he co-founded with Robert Tarrant on January 25, 1889, remained a major player in the calculator industry until the mid-1970s.
