Gold minute repeating hunter

A Swiss 18 carat yellow gold and enamel hunting cased keyless pocket watch, made by Schwob Freres & Co in La Chaux de Fonds, circa 1900. Minute repeater made for the Chinese market by two hammers on two steel gongs, activated by the slide located on the case band at 6 o’clock. The cover and case back are engraved with a motif representing a tree branch on which is perched an exotic multicoloured bird painted in translucent polychrome champlevé enamel.

Eggshell colour enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, inside gold pailloné cartouches, subsidiary seconds at 6 and gilded metal Fleur de Lys hands. A gilded brass movement, going barrel, gold screwed chaton on the central wheel, straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensated balance with gold poising screws and blued steel hairspring with terminal curve, polished steel index regulator, repeater work on the main plate, under the dial. Signature on the dial and cuvette.

The manufacturer Armand Schwob & Frères in La Chaux de Fonds brought this curious pocket watch to market around 1888 and had it patented under the name Mysterieuse. Almost all examples had silver cases. Only a few were made in gold for special customers.
