Gold hunting cased keyless repeating lever chronograph
–
A fine and heavy Swiss 14 carat pink gold full hunter pocket watch with a chronograph and minute repetition, circa 1900. It features a complex mechanical crown winding gold plated movement with a lever escapement under an inner glass exhibition cover, a compensation balance, an integrated chronograph function operated via an intermediate wheel, and a minute repeating mechanism that strikes the hours, quarters, and minutes on two internal steel gongs. The white enamel dial shows black Arabic numerals for the hours, a fine outer minute track combined with a one fifth second chronograph scale and Arabic indicators from 5 to 60, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and fine gold Breguet style hands with a central blued steel chronograph sweep hand.

The timepiece is housed in a smooth, round three body, 14 carat solid pink gold full hunter case with an à goutte closure. It features a plain, polished spring hinged front cover; a matching, smooth, polished reverse back cover; a fluted winding crown with an integrated chronograph pusher; a sliding repeater lever on the caseband; and a gold plated inner protective cuvette engraved with prize medals, alongside Répétition à Minutes Chronographe designations.

At the turn of the twentieth century, combining a chronograph mechanism with a minute repeater in a single pocket watch was one of the highest achievements of Swiss engineering, often called a grand complication calibre. This exceptional timepiece stands out for its technical complexity and its presentation, using an inner glass dust cover that lets the collector safely view the intricate steel levers, gears, and hammers of the chronograph and striking trains in motion. The prize medals engraved on the inner gold cuvette highlight the pride and international acclaim Swiss workshops received at World’s Fairs for perfecting these miniature mechanical marvels.
