Gold chronometer by Barraud

An important and interesting English pair cased pocket chronometer by Barraud London, circa 1803. An 18 carat pink gold, paircase, back with engraved monogram, standing lion and inscription “Ab Alto”, both cases with identical London hallmarks and case maker’s punch IC, watch paper, matching number on the case, movement and dial; very fine chronometer movement with spring detent escapement and large chronometer balance, chain and fusee, engraved balance bridge, original, signed and numbered enamel dial, seconds, original golden hour hand, replaced minute hand, minimal peripheral defect, two light imperfections on the edge of the case, in working order, overall well kept, very fine English chronometer, very rare with original pink gold case.

Paul Philipp Barraud (*1750; †1820) was a very well-known English watchmaker from Cornhill of London, who was specialized in making chronometer. In 1796 Barraud became the member of clockmaker company and became a master in 1810/1811. He produced chronometer in manner of Thomas Mudge but then switched to the more successful design of John Arnold and Thomas Earnshaw.
