Gold pair cased pocket watch with open face by Frères Bordier
–
A Swiss gold double-cased verge pocket watch with repeater on the bell, circa 1794. Made for the English market. This pocket watch showcases two 18K gold cases, both bearing English hallmarks from 1794. The outer case has a smooth finish, while the inner case features intricate openwork designs. The overall condition of the cases is exceptionally fine, and they are adorned with floral sound slots. Previously, the watch had an a-toc/a-tact selection slide (now missing) and a bell. The enamel dial bears the signature and is in very good condition, displaying Roman radial hours, an outer minutes track with Arabic five-minute numerals and high-quality gold hands. The watch’s movement is magnificent, featuring a Spindle movement with 1/4 hour repetition, built in English style and adorned with a diamond endstone.

Since it can be seen that this movement and the case originally belonged together, this watch is a fine example of the fact that movements by important Geneva watchmakers were also used for watches sold on the English market.

Frères Bordier, Swiss watch manufacture
Frères Bordier was active in Geneva around 1725. Denis Bordier and Isaac Bordier founded the company Les Frères Denis et Isaac Bordier, later called Frères Bordier. Denis’ son Guillaume Bordier became co-owner, and then his sons Ami Bordier and Pierre Bordier continued the business. A gold enamel watch has been proven. A gold and enamelled watch with pearls from 1815 and 1830 is in the SKM, and another is in the MMA.
