An identical thermometer was part of the collection of Theodor Beyer, auctioned in Geneva in 2003 and sold for 12,650 Swiss Francs! This thermometer was numbered 8278 and signed Courvoisier & Compagnie.

Courvoisier & Co. was founded by Louis Courvoisier in 1811. He was married to Julie Houriet, a niece of Jacques Frédéric Houriet, the inventor of the bimetallic thermometer. The connection between Courvoisier and Houriet was not limited to family relationships as this thermometer shows. It is based on Houriet’s design but with slight differences in the micrometric adjusting mechanism and the dial, which has unusual indications. The dial indicates years of recorded exceptional temperatures.
