Silver, rock crystal and painted enamel watch by Charles Bobinet
–
An extremely rare Swiss silver, rock crystal watch in the shape of a crucifix with polychrome enamel paintings, circa 1650. The watch features a gilt cross-shaped movement with a verge escapement and a pierced and engraved balance cock. The dial has an applied silver chapter ring with Roman numerals, half-hour markers, an engraved centre, and a single steel hand. The silver case is adorned with four polychrome enamel paintings on the front and a polychrome enamel painted scene depicting the crucifixion of Jesus on the back. Additionally, the sides are painted with polychrome enamel, while a hinged rock crystal cover covers the dial and decorations. The inside of the case is decorated with enamel-painted flowers. The painting on the watch is possibly done by Werner Hassel. The movement of the watch is signed by Charles Bobinet, while the enamel inside the back of the case is signed by Werner Hassel in Cassel.

Charles Bobinet, a Swiss watchmaker, was born in or around 1610 as the son of Pierre Bobinet from Poitou, France. Pierre fled to Geneva after St. Bartholomew’s Night. Charles Bobinet married Françoise Adelhardt in July 1637 in Geneva, and their 17.500daughter Pernette Bobinet (1649-1695) was born from this marriage. Though based in Castelnaudary, Aude, France for several years, Bobinet was a teacher to several individuals, including Jean Bastard in 1638, Vincent Perissel in 1639, Pierre Chenevière (1) in 1654, François Chenevière in 1655, and Jacques Sullin in 1664.
Charles Bobinet passed away on September 15, 1674, in Geneva at the age of 56. Some of his works include a crucifix watch auctioned at Antiquorum on May 31, 2014, lot no. 27 and watches signed as Charles Bobinet Paris. Moreover, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Basel Historical Museum, and the British Museum have clocks with enamelled dials by Charles Bobinet in their collection.
