Gilt-brass one-handed verge in pair cases by Estienne Hubert

A very rare and small French gilt-brass pair-cased single-handed verge pocket watch, circa 1670. Gilt full plate movement, gut and fusee, Egyptian pillars, two-arm steel balance without balance spring, fine florally engraved and pierced balance cock. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an inner minute track, polychrome enamel floral decoration in the centre and blued steel hand. A brass outer case with a glazed back, the inner case is gilded brass, lateral florally engraved and pierced. Movement signed.

Estienne (Étienne) Hubert was born in 1634 and died around 1720. He was a renowned clockmaker in Rouen, France from 1655 until 1720. Estienne became a master in 1656. The British Museum, the Guildhall Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum all own clocks created by Hubert.
