A French fire-gilded brass open faced hour-striking coach clock of museum quality with alarm, circa 1660. Gilt full plate movement, gut and fusee for the going train, two florally engraved barrels for the striking and alarm train, two hammers, a rear bell, two-arm steel balance without balance spring, fine florally engraved and pierced balance cock with a mascaron. Silvered chapter ring on an engraved gilt-brass plate with Roman hours, inner Arabic numerals for the alarm, the centre engraved and a single hand. The case is pierced and engraved. Movement signed.

Estienne (Étienne) Hubert was born in 1634 and died around 1720. He was a renowned clockmaker in Rouen, France from 1655 until 1720. Estienne became a master in 1656. The British Museum, the Guildhall Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum all own clocks created by Hubert.
