Silver verge with leather-covered transport case by Robert Williams

A remarkable English triple-cased verge pocket watch, circa 1700. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, three-arm steel balance, very finely engraved and pierced balance cock. The movement casing is incredibly rare, exquisitely engraved with bird motifs and glass panels reveal the inside. Silver champlevé dial with Roman hours and Arabic five-minute numerals. The transport case is covered with leather, the plain outer and inner case are made of silver, case maker’s mark BI. Dial and movement signed.

Robert Williams apprenticed around 1658 and became a member of the Clockmaker’s Company in 1666. He was a master from 1698 on and active until at least 1714.
