Gold open faced lever with carrousel by William Langford

A historically interesting English 18 carat gold open faced lever pocket watch with a 52½ minute carrousel, circa 1902. ¾ Plate movement, gold screw compensation balance, free sprung blued balance spring. White enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute divisions and sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. Plain case, engraved monogram WHD for Sir William Howell Davies and a coat of arms with the Welsh motto Amynedd a Dewrder (patience and courage) on the back, maker’s mark WS.
Case numbered, movement signed and numbered, case and movement with matching numbers.

Chronometer maker William Langford was one of the founding members of the Bristol Goldsmiths Alliance.

This watch is engraved with the initials and the emblem of Sir William Howell Davies (1851-1932). He was born in Narberth in Pembrokeshire, Wales and became a retailer of leather goods and a Liberal politician. In 1896 Davies was elected mayor of Bristol. He played a major role in the political life in Bristol for more than 46 years and was knighted for his services to the city in 1908.
