Silver quarter repeater by Benedikt Liebherr

A rare German silver open faced quarter repeating verge pocket watch with date, circa 1815. Full plate movement, key wind, chain and fusee, two hammers, two gongs, ring balance. White enamel dial with Arabic hours, outer minute track and a central chapter ring with Arabic numerals for indication of the date. Plain case. Dial signed, case numbered, cuvette signed and numbered.

Benedikt Liebherr. His brother Joseph and his father Franz Xaver are among the most important makers of their time in the Allgäu region, Germany. Benedikt Liebherr was a clock- and watchmaker who also founded a spinning company in Landshut. He trained in mechanical engineering at the Institute of mathematical-mechanical Engineering of Utzschneider, Reichenbach and his famous brother Joseph Liebherr in Munich. He also attended lectures in Physics and Maths at the University of Landshut. In 1818 Benedikt established his spinning mill with 60 employees. In 2006 an exhibition in Immenstadt was held in honour of the clockmaking families Liebherr and Mahler’s work.
