A Danish 18 carat gold open faced pocket watch, circa 1885. Special balanced lever movement, 31 jewels, repeating hours, quarter hours and minutes, screwed gold chatons, wolf’s toothing. Original, white enamel dial with black Arabic hours and red Arabic minutes, subsidiary seconds and blued steel hands. Plain à goutte case, patented bow setting mechanism. Cuvette, case and movement signed and numbered, case and movement with matching number.

Jules Jürgensen was a watchmaking company founded by Jürgen Jürgensen, 1740 in Denmark, when Jürgen Jürgensen went into partnership with Isaac Larpent under the name ‘Larpent & Jürgensen’. Upon Jürgen’s death in 1811, his youngest son Frederik took over the company and changed the name to ‘Frederik Jürgensen’. Jules Jürgensen produced many watches in Switzerland.

Jules Jürgensen 1808-1877 was born in Le Locle 1808 as son of the watchmaker Urban Jürgensen (grandson of Jacques-Frédéric Houriet). In Copenhagen Jürgensen received his training in the watchmaking business of his family and in addition studied mathematics, astronomy and foreign languages. Shortly after the death of Jacques-Frédéric Houriet, Jürgensen went to Switzerland and opened a watch manufactory in Le Locle. His precision watches gained worldwide recognition.
